I am still here......

Sorry for the lack of updates. I have been busy with well "life" and I am so sorry that I left anyone hanging for Carrol details. Carrol is doing well, her dogs are safe. She has a few dogs that remain that need good homes, they are still located in Rainsville AL.

If you are seeking to adopt one please view the dogs still available. I know Peggy Sue would make a excellent dog as her sister came back to Marietta GA to Our Pals Place dog rescue and was recently adopted, she was so loving and sweet, one of our favorite girls!

7 dogs to go - no notice on what day is their last.

All we know is the dogs are safe with Carrol today. Their fate tomorrow? We do not know. No answers have been given. There are several dogs waiting to go to homes/rescue up north and need transport help ASAP. They can use a donated van or if anyone who works for a rental company willing to donate a SUV or van for a trip - you can write it off as a donation to a non profit thru Forgotten Paws.

Please if you can adopt/rescue see these wonderful cupcake filled faces that need forever homes. http://www.forgottenpaws.com/GreenAcres1-10.htm

Last week & clock is ticking....... Help needed!

1.28.09 - Update on Rainsville Alabama situation
EIGHT (8) dogs left behind! We have a week to get them out. We have asked the judge for a small extension we can get these dogs that are committed to transported. Weather is a factor up north.

TRANSPORTS HELP NEEDED! - ANYONE UP FOR A ROAD TRIP!
Alabama to Connecticut - We need to rent a van, load it with crates and have two people drive it to the Connecticut area. You would drive straight through with no overnight until you drop the dogs, then you can sleep all you want! :) We have at least 3 dogs going and hopefully by the time it can be set, we will have many more! All gas and hotel will be paid.
Note: we can not transport these dogs by paid transporter b/c they take 3-4 days to go from AL to CT. We can not transport these dogs by relay transport b/c it is far too dangerous for shy dogs to be out of cars in parking lots 15 times and far too stressful.
PLEASE HELP
Rainsville to Mobile: Garlik needs to get to his rescue in Mobile, AL. I will be posting a run sheet for this transport this afternoon at www.forgottenpaws.com/transports-greenacres.htm
Donations needed: for Gas for the transport and Hotel! We are also having to spend money to get each dog up to date on everything and also get health certificates. Receiving people are assisting in this somewhat but we are still drowning in bills. Carol had $20 to her name last week until a wonderful lady in Louisiana made a great donation. However, that paid the outstanding vet bill and she is back to square one.
Dogs that are still in need: see listing at www.forgottenpaws.com/greenacres1-10.htm
Ginger, Yellow lab cattle dog,
Sissy, Black lab, Am. Bulldog and full of spirit and happiness
Fernando, brindle Dalmatian mix, looks mean but is a doll and shy. He follows you around nose to but though.
Selena - Black lab, Am. Bulldog (Special needs)
Alex- Black lab, Am. Bulldog
Benny- Black lab, Am. Bulldog
Andy- Black lab, Am. Bulldog
Luke- Black lab, Am. Bulldog

The clock is ticking fast and unfortunately we only have a few weeks to help Carrol save her wonderful dogs! If you can help with rescue, foster, transport or adoptions please see the list of people who can help you.

Murphy is doing "all - right"

Remember Murphy the dog beaten in Atlanta with a sledge hammer? He is at home and doing better then expected. In fact - Murphy will be joining the New Years Eve parade as a honorary golden retriever in the Chick-fil-A Bowl parade (shhhhh.. do not tell Murphy he is a mutt) with his new best friend Robert. Robert has been volunteering with the Golden Retriever Rescue of Atlanta. I am sure both will have big smiles during the parade! I know so many people will be thrilled not only to see Murphy out there strutting his stuff, but to see the kind man who saved him.

Come on down and show your support!
http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/atlanta/stories/2008/12/30/murphy_bowl_parade.html

I had the pleasure of talking in length with Robert and he is by far the nicest - down to earth guy, of course he is - he saved Murphy! The day he picked up Murphy's little damaged body up at the park, it so happened to have been Robert's 60th birthday. The vet said Murphy had little chances of living due to all the head damage. Robert just could not bare to put him down, even though it was not his dog, he took a chance and I think he is pretty darn happy with that decision and so is Murphy! I think from here forward Robert & Murphy will have a lot to celebrate on December 2nd! His story is amazing and people all the way from Canada & Puerto Rico have donated towards Murphy's $6k vet bill, pretty amazing huh? I think so.  In the new year I will have the pleasure to photograph Robert and his 3 dogs and I so look forward to meeting all of them and getting some fun photos of their new journey together! You can check on Robert's own personal web page for weekly updates on Murphy!

May 2009 be very positive for all.

PUPPY MILLS

If you know anyone who is thinking of adopting that cute doggie in the window, let them know where places like Petland get their cute little puppies from! Let them know how sick they are, let them know their bloody feet pads are worn to the max.

Thankfully this bust in Canada will shine some light for dogs who have never seen it.

I hope 4 all dogs to find peace

'Twas the Night Before Christmas
Author Unknown
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
With no thought of the dog filling their head.
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Knew he was cold, but didn't care about that.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Figuring the dog was free of his chain and into the trash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But Santa Claus - with eyes full of tears.
He unchained the dog, once so lively and quick,
Last years Christmas present, now painfully thin and sick..
More rapid than eagles he called the dog’s name.
And the dog ran to him, despite all his pain;
"Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN!
On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONDER and BLITZEN!
To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall!
Let's find this dog a home where he'll be loved by all."
I knew in an instant there would be no gifts this year,
For Santa Claus had made one thing quite clear,
The gift of a dog is not just for the season,
We had gotten the pup for all the wrong reasons.
In our haste to think of the kids a gift
There was one important thing that we missed.
A dog should be family, and cared for the same
You don't give a gift, then put it on a chain.
And I heard him exclaim as he rode out of sight,
"You weren't giving a gift! You were giving a life!"

Carrol is a fighter

Carrol sits where her family home once stood - before the arson.

My friend Bill and I ventured out to visit Carrol Crocker today. Despite the cold weather, the concrete block she lives in, the flooding of her living area when it rains & the 20 dogs that remain needing homes - she manages to smile, laugh and fight for her dogs. The courts have decided that February 6th is her final day for her dogs to be removed or yes, they will be taken & destroyed. Many rescues, adopters & fosters have opened up their homes for over 80 of her dogs in just a little over 2 months. That's amazing. With the holidays, the struggling economy & so many thousands of other dogs facing death row - will these dogs make it? The 8 week count down begins.

If you are looking to adopt, foster or rescue please see some of these beautiful faces I photographed. Everyone knew which dogs would be last, but these dogs are not just plain and ordinary, I promise you all these guys are a delight, well socialized, loving and in need to be someones best friend. They are also kid approved - my 10 year old step son gives 2 thumbs up to Carrol's dogs - having met each on a prior trip, there is not a dog he would not want to bring back.

Carrol & Beauregard - a gentle giant

Georgie is a silly delight, he just wants to play and be all up in my camera!

Fernando - looks like a creature strolling thru the jungle - he is strikingly BEAUTIFUL, gentle & a good boy! His siblings have all been rescued!

Susie & Hezikiah both very playful and love bugs.

Carrol <span class=

The dogs give back what Carrol has given to all of them - LOVE

Donations

If you are looking to donate you can mail a check directly to Carrol or even gift cards where she can get dog food at a Walmart close to her home. It would be very appreciated!

I rescued a human today

by Janine Allen

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.
I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.
She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.
I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.
I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.
I rescued a human today.

A new chapter

This blog is all about change makers. Robert Kennedy is just that. If you have not heard the awful story of Murphy here in Atlanta - the dog who got his head bashed in by his owner with a sledge hammer then you must follow up... his owner has no value of "life" & I hope he pays the highest price and may it be a lesson to the other sick animal beaters out there.

http://www.myfoxatlanta.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=8002763&version=3&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=3.2.1

Here is a current photo of Murphy found online recovering. Apparently he is doing quite well for what he has gone thru. He is already milking it - according to the news I guess he is not having much to do with his dog food, but eating the heck out of rotisserie chicken, who can argue with a face like that? All I know is I would love to give a BIG HUG to Mr. Robert Kennedy for taking the time to stop, pick Murphy's poor bloody body up and caring enough to save this dog. He is a true dog rescuer! We need more people like him! Everyone I know has just been touched by this mans act of kindness. He even offered to pay the vet bill racking up to nearly $6k and has adopted Murphy. According to the vet on the radio - there could not be a better person to adopt Murphy. When I think of what Murphy went thru it makes me sick/angry, then I think what Murphy has to look forward to and I smile. There is no telling what Murphy's struggles were before landing in the park nearly dead, all we know now is that he will only be cared for by kind new human friend. Thank you Robert for saving him!

Donations for Murphy

Those interested in helping Kennedy with Murphy's medical bills can make a gift at any Wachovia Bank branch, to the Murphy the Dog account, number 1010209642669.

Gloria is safe!!

THANKFULLY Gloria the missing dog - has been found and is back at her new home!! Aside from being hungry and a little weight loss she is in good condition. I have a feeling she was trying to find her way back to Carrol's, who could blame her, she took such good care of her dogs! Thank you to everyone who helped to find her!

Estimated 20 more dogs to find homes! Please if you can open your home to foster or adopt please do! We need these dogs to safe homes. What progress has been made since middle of September is just amazing with moving over 80 dogs!! Thank you everyone for stepping up to the plate to help donate, transport, foster, adopt, spread the word etc! The rescue community is awesome!

Transport needed!

Rainsville to Atlanta ASAP - 3 dogs to come back. Please email forgottenpaws@yahoo.com

Carrol update!

Carrol is doing well and has her heat for the winter! She is so pleased to see her dogs go to new homes, she loves hearing the stories and seeing photos.

Scrapbook for Carrol

We would like to do something very special for Carrol. Giving up her beloved 100 dogs was no easy task for Carrol. She will always wonder if her dogs are being well cared for. If you have adopted, rescued or fostered a Carrol dog please email me so we can get some photos/stories to post in the scrapbook. If you were someone who donated, volunteered at her work party etc, please write something special to enclose in her book. This has been a journey and she would love nothing more then to have a book dedicated to her with her dogs new journeys of life! I am sure it will be a never ending scrap book, so we will leave her plenty of pages to add in the future! Please email me ASAP hope4dogs@gmail.com

26 DOGS TO GO!! Please help!

From Morgan - Forgotten Paws Dog Rescue:

We still have 26 dogs to go!!!!!!!! Transports needed are posted at www.forgottenpaws.com/transports-greenacres.htm.
Rainsville to Atlanta - 11/20 anytime (covered - THANK YOU Bill Russell!!!!!!)
Atlanta to Jacksonville - 11/22
Rainsville to Brinkley, AR- 11/22 (this date could change)
Rainsville to northern NY - date not yet set but early December still working on more....

Foster Homes needed: If we can find foster care for these dogs, we can ready them for new homes or adoption. Alot of groups and individuals are scared off by the fact that these dogs have lived outside for so long. It is tough for them to believe how wonderful these babies have transitioned into their new lives. If we can place them in foster care and make them even better, we can find them homes quicker. Donations needed: Laverne had a grand Mal seizure no Friday which resulted in a $200 vet bill to do blood work, etc. As of now she is fine but that was money that was set to go to other dogs to ready them for new homes. You can donate to Carol, Laverne's care or Gloria (see below) by going to http://forgottenpaws.com/donationspage.htm. The donation button is on the left hand side. Email Volunteers needed: I need volunteers who can email rescues in various states to see if they can take one dog from Carol's. We will have to be organized though so we aren't all doing the same states. We really need to put forth a grand effort to get these last 25 dogs out of there. Please email forgottenpaws@yahoo.com if you want to help.

DONATIONS NEEDED: for a REWARD on Gloria. We are posting a $500 reward to anyone who can find her. We have a man in Florida, willing to match any donations we can get up to $500 and he is going to go out this weekend and track her with his bloodhound IF we can find something with her scent on it. You can donate to Carol, Laverne's care or Gloria (see below) by going to http://forgottenpaws.com/donationspage.htm. The donation button is on the left hand side. Gloria was lost in Brooksville, Fl on 10/24. She has been sited a few times and we have been thrown far off course by mistaken identities. On Nov 16th, Gloria was cited by a newspaper delivery person only 2 streets over from where she was originally lost. Cedar Drive and Highpoint Road are her last sitings. This means (hopefully) that she is in the area!

TO ALL SEARCH VOLUNTEERS: If you are searching for Gloria and you come across her, your body posture is very important. You will need to get down on your knees and talk to her softly calling her "sweetie" in a baby like voice. You may have to crawl slowing towards her to get to her. DO NOT WALK or she will just run. She may crawl to you but I doubt it. Do not raise you hands to move suddenly. If others are nearby, have them hide so she doesn't get scared by them. Thank you to all the individuals and groups who have taken on dogs either as fosters or new members of their families. Thank you to all of the people who have assisted in transporting these babies to their new homes and rescues as well.Thank you to everyone who still reads this blog and is still trying to help out by forwarding out the listing.

(Gloria)

Thank you!

28 dogs to go!

November is adopt a senior pet month. And in the world of animal welfare, older dogs face an uncertain future because they are considered "less desirable." This is Sheeba & Mico - they are a beautiful senior pair that need a cozy home together. Sheeba paws you for kisses and hugs, Mico still has that playful side and they are such a cute pair. They wait patiently at Carrols to find their safe retirement home.

Sorry for the lack of updates. We still have a lot of dogs to find immediate homes for. Please if you can open your home or rescue - contact us.

Unfortunately we do not have any further updates on Pam.

Please share this list of wonderful dogs and lets get them to a safe place, time is running short! We still have no idea when or what day they will come in to claim the rest of Carrol's beloved dogs! With the holidays fast approaching things could really slow down, if you can help, Carrol would be forever grateful.

The 1987 Carrol

Thanks to Jan - Carrol's sister for sharing this photo of Carrol. I think Carrol is beautiful inside and out, but wow she looks like a pretty sassy thing here. Wasn't Carrol a hottie? Its been interesting to find out from Jan the family history of their land. Some of those neighbors who don't lend a hand - live on their family land, they also knew their family. I don't get it. Its all about doing the right thing.

Please consider helping Carrol by either donating or rescue/adopting.

**Thank you again to all rescues/adopter's & the good people who have donated**

Meet Big Momma - 49 to Go!

Wont you adopt me?

Big Momma tends to be the favorite for many who have been to visit Carrol Crocker. Yet, I can not understand why she is still there? Big Momma follows you around and has the sappiest bulldog eyes that will make you melt. She is a big girl who loves to roll around on her back and wiggle. She is 7-8 years old - plenty young still, but she will need a great home to retire too. If you want a girl who will sit by your side and rest her head in your lap, or follow you around your yard, a dog who will be your best girlfriend? This girl is it... She was a favorite with my step son - so she is kid approved! 49 dogs to go... Big Momma is ready for her first Halloween, will you be the special one to share it with her?
Thank you to Carrol's sister for transporting Katie to her new home in VA!

WORK DAY THIS SATURDAY OCT 18TH

Please everyone spread the news!
From Bill Russell:

Work party update

Volunteers and Rescue workers are nothing if not flexible, I guess saving the world requires it of us….anyway there is going to be a change of plans…We are still counting on everybody being there by 9am. on Saturday the 18th but we will not have the bobcat there. It seemed that for the cost of the rental, we needed to make sure that the bobcat was the correct piece of equipment. Rather than spend the money and not get the full use of the bobcat, it was decided that there was plenty of work that could be done without it and after this Saturday, Harry, and and anyone else familiar with equipment like this, could evaluate what would be needed to finish the clean up of the home site, what equipment would be best and also how we can get that equipment the cheapest way.{ There are some problems unique to this location, such as a root cellar in the middle of the home site, that make this more than a routine clean up.}

We can do much to clean up the loose debris and start with the cutting down of the large tree adjacent to the home site which presents a definite safety issue. There is also weedeating and some insulation work that needs to be done. Plus, and most importantly, there are dogs to visit and interact with. Several of the people who have volunteered to help with the work party are also interested in fostering and rescuing some of the dogs.

Because everyone has at least an hour drive - most of us much longer- to Carrol’s, it was apparent that we would not get a full day’s work out of the equipment that we would be renting. Since this equipment was going to be paid by Carrol and by donations, it did not seem the most efficient use of that money. Also, since this is many of the volunteer’s first visit to Carrol’s place, we felt that they would like to have some time to get to know Carrol and the dogs. We still have a long day’s work, but think we can both accomplish those work goals and have time to visit with Carrol and the dogs.

So, bring your gloves and tools and be prepared to work. Carrol is counting on the work starting around 9 and will have most of the morning feed done by then. We hope to get a lot done and be better able to see what will still need to be done at a later date. Go to bed early Friday night, rest well, eat a good breakfast and come prepared to work. See you all Saturday morning. Thanks for your efforts. Bill

Dog of the week

Did you know black dogs have the highest kill rates? Why? Because of  black dog syndrome.

They can sometimes be to "plain" or their dark colors may hide their cuteness. Black dogs are always last to be adopted in county shelters. Carrol has many black dogs, please don't over look them. My personal favorite is Laverne. I fell in love with her. She has this crooked smile, she follows you around and nudges your hand with her head to pet her. She looks at you like she is 1/2 smiling, a total love bug and in need of being a princess in someones loving home.

Please consider one of Carrols many dogs for adoption. Get nose to nose with a new best friend and they will remind you each day of a wonderful woman who really knows the meaning of being humble.

Laverne

Get your work groove on!

From Bill Russell:

Carrol was to make the arrangements for the backhoe this week. She is excited about the prospect of not only cleaning up the rubble from the home site, but also meeting many of the people who have expressed interest and support for her efforts to save these dogs.

Several volunteers from Our Pals Place, a no kill private rescue facility in the Atlanta metro area have commited to helping on the 18th. Several individuals from Birmingham have volunteered, enquiries from people in Tennessee and elsewhere have let Carrol know that she is appreciated and supported.

To get some idea of how many are going to be there, I would appreciate an email notifying me of your intent to volunteer on the 18th. Please put “workparty” or “Oct 18th” in the subject line and send to: wmrussell1@yahoo.com

What is needed for that day:

Rakes and shovels
A couple of wheelbarrows
A heavy duty weedeater{s}
Work gloves for each volunteer

The current plan is to dismantle the chimneys, saving the blocks and stones for later use.
Removing the remnants of the foundation and stacking the concrete blocks for reuse or sale.
Cleaning up the broken glass and other debris from the fire.
Leveling and smoothing out the homesite.

Heather’s husband has experience running a backhoe. Any others with experience, feel free to step forward and be recognized, your assistance will be appreciated.

The home site is located just off Hwy 35, Rainsville, Ala 35986 at 239 Fortner Rd. This is approximately 2-3 miles off of Interstate 59 and is easy to find {must be, we found it}. There is limitied parking at Carrol’s property. Please be mindful that surrounding neighbors have not been supportive and in fact are the cause of many of Carrol’s problems. So, please be respectful of their property when parking along the roadside. I hope they realize that the effort to clean up the homesite will benefit them too as will all the efforts to re-home Carrol’s dogs.

There will be additional information as to times, etc. posted leading up to the 18th. Thank you to all who have shown their support. It is gratifying to see how many “strangers” come together when one of us needs help.

Thank you to everyone who is donating. Some people in her community have been helping her out. Carrol will have heat this winter, Dale sent her enough funds to get a wood burning stove!! woo-hoo!! With the funds coming in she has managed to put wood chips in most all the dog houses & help get some dogs with some vetting. She received a nice pair of blue boots from Amazon while we were there. Her story and work has touched many and it shows how many good people are out there! I could not possibly make a list with each and every person out there who has donated, but you know who you are, you are making this possible, along with the rescues and adopters!!
